You can call it pie in the sky, but pizza delivery is now a real thing -- at least in the Land Down Under.
Domino's Pizza Enterprises said Wednesday
it had completed what it called the world's first delivery of a pizza
to a customer in New Zealand. Under the watch of a team of drone
experts, the unmanned aerial vehicle used GPS navigation to
autonomously deliver Peri-Peri Chicken and Chicken and Cranberry pizzas
to a backyard in Whangaparaoa, about 20 miles north of Auckland.
Drones have
grown in popularity among big retailers such as Amazon and Walmart,
which are continually looking for new ways to get a jump on the
competition and attract customers. The small, commercial aerial drones
could avoid the delays of terrestrial deliveries by flying above traffic
and avoiding circuitous roadways.
"They can avoid traffic
congestion and traffic lights, and safely reduce the delivery time and
distance by traveling directly to customers' homes," Domino's Group CEO
Don Meij said in a statement. "This is the future."
Domino's
plans to use the information gathered from these flights to expand the
service to Australia, Belgium, France, The Netherlands, Japan and
Germany.

Own a Ford with Sync technology? Now you can order a pizza hands free!
Ford’s relentless push to add as many apps to its Sync portfolio has
finally peaked. With pizza. Because everyone should be able to order a
pie without taking their hands off the wheel.
Anyone with Ford’s ubiquitous Sync AppLink system in their dashboard and a Domino’s app on their phone can, through their Domino’s “Pizza Profile,” place an order with a few voice commands and pick up a steaming, cardboard-crust pie on the way home. The “Pizza Profile” stores your payment info and details on your favorite pie, so you aren’t repeating “large Brookyln-style with pepperoni, bacon and pineapple” over and over, trying to get Sync to recognize the command.
“This is, no question, one of the coolest in a long list of recent technology innovations for Domino’s,” Patrick Doyle, the pizza chain’s president and CEO, said with complete earnestness.
AppLink allows drivers to connect to supported apps using voice commands, and with dozens of apps optimized for Ford’s Sync system, it’s one of the most dominant players in the market.

New DVD campaign by Domino's pizza.
Chances are, if you're having a movie night, there could be pizza
involved. But that means an actual edible pizza -- not a DVD that
happens to smell like one.
Domino's Brazil has teamed up with 10 video rental stores to create DVDs with a heady pizza scent, all thanks to thermal ink. When the DVD is finished, an image of a pizza appears on it.
As soon as the disks get hot when played, they start to smell like Domino's. After the DVD is ejected, special thermal ink has turned the disk into a mini pizza that reads: "Did you enjoy the movie? The next one will be even better with a hot and delicious Domino's Pizza."
Congratulations on an extremely successful promotion, Domino's!
